3 Tips For Creating Drought-Resistant Landscaping
In our world of ever-rising temperatures and ever-decreasing freshwater, it’s important that we all do our part to conserve as much as we can. Luckily, if you plan your home correctly, you can save a lot more water than you might have thought possible.
To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for creating drought-resistant landscaping that uses very little water while still looking beautiful.
Put Down Some Cover
While you might think that the best way to create drought-resistant landscaping is to have no landscaping at all, you may be surprised to learn that this really isn’t the case.
According to Luke Miller, a contributor to Family Handyman, if you were to leave the ground of your property completely exposed to the heat, sun, and other elements, it would quickly become hard-packed soil that wouldn’t be very beautiful to look at or easy to work with. So rather than just letting the earth sit there and do whatever it naturally would, you should put some type of cover over the group. By covering the soil with something like mulch, you’ll allow more moisture to be held in the ground so that, if the time comes where you want to add something else, you’ll have an easier time doing so.
Complement Rock And Stone
One option you can use for covering the soil of your property is to lay down rock or stone. In some areas, it may make more sense for you to use stone, like pavers for your driveway or a path. However, you can use rock or stone to compliment almost any home design or property.
To help you with this, Jacqueline Terrebonne, a contributor to Architectural Digest, suggests that you use rock to help frame and showcase any plants or other hardscaping that you do want to include in your landscape design. This can be done by allowing things like succulents to grow through the rock that you lay as ground cover or to use stones to create visual interest in other areas of your property.
Take Inspiration From Your Surroundings
If you’re not wanting to do hardscaping for the entirety of your drought-resistant landscape design, Hadley Keller, a contributor to HouseBeautiful.com, suggests that you take inspiration from the natural surroundings of your home or the area in which you live to see which plants might thrive on your property. If you’re unsure about what the best plants or vegetation might be for your home, you can always speak with a professional in your area to get their advice and expertise.
If you’re wanting to have beautiful landscaping without all the water and hassle of a traditional yard, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you create a drought-resistant landscape design.
