How Many Types of Storm Shutters Are There?

In the world, 80% to 90% of all tornadoes occur in the United States, which has the world’s most extreme weather.

No matter where you live and what you do, the weather will catch up with you. Every year millions of dollars in damage happen because of hail and high winds. Storm shutters can help prevent that cost to you, as they protect your windows from the direct impact of ice or windborne objects.

One size of storm shutter doesn’t fit all, so here is a list of the five most common:

1. Colonial Shutters

As the name implies, these shutters look old-fashioned but work great. They attach one piece on each side to the sides of a window and then come together. Once secure, they create a shield that stops anything from striking the glass.

Not only do these shutters work well, but they can also look great too. This is an excellent option if you have an older home or live in an area with older homes.

2. Bahama Style Shutters

One of the older types of hurricane shutters, Bahama shutters open like a canopy, being held against the house above the window. This means they double as a shield against impact and a pleasant shade over a window during the warm months. This is a popular style in electric storm shutters as well.

3. Plywood Shutters

Often you’ll find plywood shutters are the DIY storm shutters of choice. Nothing could be simpler than putting sheets of plywood up and nailing them or fixing them via brackets to the house. Of course, while it’s easy, many people won’t find it very appealing.

Plywood, while effective, can also get torn free if not anchored well enough. Don’t forget, wind can reach around objects and rip them off of homes during a hurricane or tornado.

4. Rolling Storm Shutters

Rolling storm shutters do exactly as the name implies; they roll down over a window. These storm shutters are often made of thin metal. This does present good protection, but not as good as some of the other styles of modem storm shutters.

As long as they are installed right, rolling storm shutters are excellent shields.

5. Accordion Storm Shutters

These shutters pull across a window, flattening as they are extended. It is important that they are the right size, as any extra length can create weaknesses. Storm damage can occur if a heavy object or wind hits an accordion shutter that is only half-open, for instance.

If they are installed and sized by a professional, these are very easy to use and out of the way when not deployed. This can make them attractive in some neighborhoods and areas.

Use Storm Shutters to Protect Your Windows

Storm shutters are one of the best ways to protect your house. Once windows are compromised, the wind can then reach through the home, and this is when the roof gets torn off. Storm shutters protect more than just the glass of your window, they protect your home.
