Start Enjoying Your Perfectly Imperfect Garden

despite what you might think after scrolling through gorgeous looking floral gardens on Tiktok and Instagram, it really doesnt need to win any awards to be worthwhile having. Not all of us have the time or inclination to make our garden look like something from the Philadelphia Flower Show, it just needs to be somewhere that you find nice and relaxing. Because being able to spend time outside and get some sun on your skin in the warmer months might be exactly what you need to destress when life gets busy. Here’s how you can create your perfectly imperfect garden.

Your Plants Don’t Have to Make Sense to Anyone Else

Gardening advice is endless and often conflicting. Your local garden centre is full of different bulbs, seeds and plants that should be planted in specific ways and need a lot of care to stay looking great. But you might not have time to constantly pull out weeds from your flower beds or water pots twice a day. You don’t need a perfectly groomed garden with a structured planting plan for it to be nice, you could always embrace a bit of wildness. Sprinkle down some wildflower seeds and it will give you a ton of colour for months of the year, wont need anything extra from you and as a bonus will be a haven for bugs and wildlife. Once it’s finished, mow it down and your garden will look tidy again through the winter. Simple herbs like rosemary and basil usually grow well if you dont have lots of time for maintenance, and they’re easy to pick up at most grocery stores. Basil doesn’t complain much about forgotten waterings, and rosemary tends to stay green even if you ignore it longer than recommended. Mint grows enthusiastically (possibly too much) but at least it’s alive (and great in iced tea, if that’s your thing). Start with whatever is easy so gardening doesn’t feel like another chore on top of a hundred others.

Know What to Invest In

Instead of spending hundreds on plants that will only flower for a season, spend you money in the garden on things that will last. A sturdy fence will make sure that your space is secure and private and will stand the test of time if you choose the right material. You could consider a pvc fence company or go with mental or composite as an alternative to wood. Buy a good furniture set that allows you to sit out and enjoy the garden regardless of what else is going on. And a few decent tools like spades, shovels and weeding equipment mean that you can always tackle bits of the garden on the days that you feel like it.

Remember That Gardening Is Actually Pretty Messy

Gardening isn’t the tidy, carefree image you see in posts online. Knees and wrists ache the day after weeding. Bugs will always crawl out unexpectedly from underneath pots or leaves. Your porch probably has a muddy pair of gloves and old buckets you can’t remember placing there. But that messy side can feel satisfying- like turning dirt into a small patch of actual vegetables or flowers feels genuinely good.
